I really dislike the word free when it used with music. Moreover, I really dislike the word mixtape in urban music.
However, free isn’t always bad. Free music can be a good for an artists brand -in my opinion- as long as there is a transaction.
For example, an artist can use their music to incentivize people giving them their information (like an email list) while building a database of their fans. You can use this database to promote shows, sell merchandise, rapport building, etc. Sky’s the limit.
Don’t be like the regular mojo out there, take your brand to a high level. If you’re going to give it away for free, get something back in return for it that will benefit you. Respect yourself, your craft and art.
