There are very few over night successes in music and business. As a matter of fact, most artists -about 97%- would have a hard time selling a thousand record to anybody. Nevertheless, there’s millions of artists out there who believe they will just get by through their natural born gifts. This is a wrong and bad perspective to have, because after all music is a business. What people fail to understand, there’s several things one must do to accomplish grand ambitions. This is not to be taken lightly, one has to be serious and be rounded overall.
It Takes Skill, Knowledge and A Little Bit of Talent
Enough talent is all you need to make it. Developing your skills and knowledge however are greater factors to success.
Why do I say this? You can have all the talent in the world but if you don’t develop the skills and knowledge of business, you’re setting yourself up for losing. For example, how one creates a sale is by meeting the demand of the market and supply the need. If you don’t know how to engage a potential customer, market your products and persuade them to buy, your dream of becoming a multi-platinum selling artist will never happen. Plain and simple.
This goes for everything across the board, no matter what your goals are. You might just be interested in touring and performing half the year as an indie artist. One can’t just get up and say, “I’m going to tour.” First as a artist you must hone your performance skills and develop your craft in this sense. Then you have to practice with your band and figure out sets. Afterward you have announce to the market place your presence, handle merch, build your team, engage of fans, etc. All this takes skill and knowledge. If you’re vouching on just your talent, you might as well don’t bother.
Be Humble and Work Hard
To become successful in the music business and anything else in life, humbling yourself and working hard will your keys to success. If it is your dream, plan or wish to become an extraordinary person of recognition, sacrifices will have to be made. If you’re not willing to give time to spend with your kids and decline social outing with your friends, you will need to redefine what it is you really want.
Look at it this way, think of your favorite artist. They’re doing lots of things to create impact of millions of people worldwide. One day you wake up and they’re doing some interview in at a CNN studio in Atlanta, tomorrow they’re performing at some award show, then the next day you hear about them starting a tour in Brazil by weekend. In and around that they have to manage their personal lives, many times putting their personal relationships on the table to do their job -entertain you.
